The first glass bottles that were strong enough to contain the pressure of sparkling drinks (long before the likes of Champagne) were invented in the West of Britain, in the early 1600's. And some of the first drinks ever mentioned in writing, that were made to be sparkling (on purpose), in bottles like this, were cider & perry!
There are some lovely descriptions in old literature, describing such sparkling drinks at 'Pot-Gun' drinks, as they would burst from the bottle & fly about the house when opened!
